Core Elements of Tutorial Method Approaches to Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship Competencies
Instructors need to understand the apprenticeship competencies that the apprentice is working towards. They should also have a line of sight into activities on the Craft tracker that the apprentice is working towards at this moment.
Modules of Study
Instructors need to have conceptual and theoretical knowledge about the core/required modules and related/additional modules being studied within the degree program. (Modules refer to the individual units within a course). They need to be able to merge this with knowledge of the apprenticeship competencies.
Apprenticeship Placement
Instructors need to know where each of their apprentices is placed, and what work they are performing within their apprenticeship. The more context that they have about the apprentices’ context, day-to-day routines, and experience, the more effectively they will be able to tailor their instruction.
Strengths & Growth Areas
Instructors need to know each apprentice’s key areas of academic and practice-based strengths and weaknesses and should use this information to inform the design of each tutorial session.
